Good news for Hitchin electric car owners as chargepoints in the East of England grow by 43% in a year

Electric vehicle (EV) drivers across the East of England now have even more reasons to drive with confidence, as the region has seen a significant boost in public charging infrastructure over the past year.
Since April 2024, a total of 1,760 new public chargepoints have been installed across the region — a 43% increase — bringing the total to over 5,800 public chargers. The expansion is part of a broader government effort to accelerate the switch to cleaner transport and make EV ownership more accessible.
Future of Roads Minister Lilian Greenwood welcomed the progress, saying: "We want to make sure that drivers in the East of England are always close to an electric vehicle charging device. That's' why it's great to see the number of public charging devices in the region growing by 43% since April last year, taking us to more than 5,800 public charging devices in the East of England.
"We're investing £2.3 billion to help drivers switch to electric vehicles while putting money in the pockets of hardworking people by protecting jobs and backing British carmakers as part of the Plan for Change."
Last month it was announced that new EV chargers will be going into car parks in Bancroft, The Lairage and Woodside with work planned to start on the week commencing the 21st April.
