The family of 46-year-old Jason O'Hanlon have paid a heartfelt tribute after he sadly died following a collision in Hitchin.

The incident happened at around 2pm on Monday 13 October on Purwell Lane, near the junction with Willian Road. It was reported that a blue modified electric pedal cycle was in collision with a white BMW X6. Jason, from Hitchin, sustained life-threatening injuries and was taken to hospital, where he sadly passed away on Friday 17 October.

In a statement, Jason's family said:

"We are heartbroken at the loss of the man so many loved. He was a cherished father, partner, son, brother and friend to so many. Losing Jason in such a sudden and devastating way has left a hole that can never be filled."

They also expressed their gratitude to emergency services and hospital staff, and have asked for privacy as they grieve.

Police said that, prior to the collision, the cyclist had interacted with a marked white Peugeot 3008 driven by British Transport Police (BTP). In line with standard procedure, BTP referred the matter to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC). Following a review, the IOPC determined the investigation will remain with Hertfordshire Constabulary.

Inspector Craig Wheeler, from the Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire Road Policing Unit, said:

"Firstly, I would like to offer my deepest sympathies to Jason's loved ones at this incredibly difficult time. Our enquiries are ongoing, and I am appealing to anyone who saw the bike, the white BMW or the marked police vehicle in the Purwell Lane and Willian Road area either before or at the time of the collision, to contact me."

Appeal for witnesses and footage

If you witnessed the incident or have CCTV/dash cam covering Purwell Lane/Willian Road around the time of the collision, please upload it via the police portal: herts.police.uk/dashcamupload.
