Hitchin's former Wilko store is set to open as a Poundland this coming weekend, the cut price national chain has announced.

The now vacant site on Bancroft will reopen as a Poundland following Wilko being forced into administration last month.

The home of the former Poundland on Hitchin High Street which closed during the pandemic - the site that used to house Woolworth's the chain ceased to exist - still remains empty despite a unique, creative art pop up at the premises recently.

Poundland claimed it is prioritising former Wilko staff for roles, stating that it had made job offers to more than 500 former Wilko employees across the country.

However, as you can see from our weekly Five Jobs Now series, Poundland are recruiting for a town centre store manager

Poundland's managing director, Austin Cooke, said: "To open 75 stores in the space of a single quarter is nothing short of a super-human effort from every member of the Poundland team.

"To each and every one of them I say 'thank you'.

"But we're working at this pace because we're on a mission –ambitious to grow, create jobs and serve new communities by opening shops customers and communities can be proud of."
