Hitchin: Great Northern and Thameslink trains to London Kings Cross facing significant disruption after thieves steal cable

Weary Hitchin commuters will face significant delays this Monday morning (June 27) with train lines blocked on the route from Peterborough through to London Kings Cross and St Pancras following the theft of approximately 200 metres of signalling cable.

With many commuters struggling to get to London after three national rail strikes last week, their frustrations have been compounded by the theft that has led to the cancellation of a large number of trains running between Peterborough and Hitchin and Stevenage.

Network Rail technicians are believed to be replacing the missing and damaged cable - however it is not known exactly how long this will take.

It is understood that they are working on repairing the damaged electrical power cables - and once this is done they will start working on damaged signalling cables..

The theft happened between Peterborough and St Neots

Commuters warned

Commuters have been informed to expect extended journey times of around half an hour and to plan ahead accordingly - while Thameslink have admitted that trains may be delayed by up to 60 minutes or revised.

National Rail expects trains will be majorly disrupted until 1pm.

Thameslink services

Thameslink services, due to run between Peterborough and Horsham, will now run as an hourly service between Peterborough and London Kings Cross only. All other Great Northern and Thameslink services to Peterborough have been cancelled.
