Hitchin's Papa Johns restaurant has survived the axe.

Despite the national pizza chain announcing the closure of 43 'underperforming' restaurants across the country, the Hitchin branch on 32/33 Nightingale Road survives.

As Hitchin Nub News has been reporting Papa Johns had been considering closing as many as 100 stores across the UK as trading positions become more challenging.

However, on Tuesday (March 26) the company confirmed 43 stores earmarked for closure - due to the company labelling them "underperforming locations that are no longer financially viable".

The news also means that other Papa John's Hertfordshire stores have also avoided closure.

Sites in Stevenage, Welwyn Garden City, Hatfield, Potters Bar, St Albans and Harpenden will continue to trade, but the Watford store will be closing.

Papa John's says the sites will close by mid-May following a consultation period - but the nationwide pizza provider refused to reveal how many jobs will be lost.
