Hitchin: Whitehill Junior School shortlisted for Beano comic's funniest class in Britain competition - vote now to help them win

Wilde Class from Whitehill Junior School in Hitchin has been shortlisted in a nationwide search to crown Britain's Funniest Class of 2023

The annual joke competition challenges primary school classes across the country to pen original jokes to be in with a chance of winning the prestigious title

Whitehill Junior School in Hitchin have been revealed as one of the funniest schools in the country. Wilde Class has been shortlisted as one of the ten finalists in Beano's hunt for Britain's Funniest Class 2023.

Their joke "What did Gnasher want to be when he grew up? A Bark-cheologist!" was specially chosen by Beano's panel of expert judges and is now being put to a public vote on https://beano.com/vote to decide the ultimate winner.

Speaking to Hitchin Nub News, highly-regard Whitehill head teacher Steve Mills said: "The class have had so much fun over the course of the last year after Benny's joke won the competition in Year 5.

"To get shortlisted again is quite something and we now have to keep our fingers crossed that we can get the majority share of the vote.

"The competition was linked to aspects of the RSHE Curriculum and so lessons covering friendship and cooperation led up to submitting the joke. Fingers crossed!"

Primary schools across Britain submitted their best gags, which have been whittled down by Beano's best gagmakers and now go forward to a public vote on https://beano.com/vote to decide the winner.

This year's funniest class will receive a Beano trophy, an illustration of the class which will be published in the comic, Beano subscriptions and books, and a fun-filled Beano assembly for the whole school.

Mike Stirling, Editorial Director at Beano Studios said: "We love Jurassic laughs, and Wilde Class has dug up a new specimen by including Gnasher.

"It's great fun to tell, too - the louder you 'bark,' the funnier it gets! Can Whitehill Junior School, Hitchin, home of Beano writer, Danny Pearson, claim Britain's Funniest Class for the second year in a row?"

Britain's Funniest Class was launched in 2019, when Foxes Class from Castlewood Primary in Horsham, West Sussex took the crown with their joke, "At the bank a lady asked me to check her balance, so I pushed her over".

The current reigning champions are year 5 class Voyager from Whitehill Junior School with their winning joke "What do you call a class of children who eat potatoes using their toes?! The Mash Street Kids!" which was displayed on a billboard near to Hitchin railway station.

Voting for Britain's Funniest Class closes on April 28.
