Hitchin security apprentice says career switch has given him a sense of direction
By James Denselow 15th Jun 2026
A young Hitchin-based employee at local firm Arena Security says joining the company and enrolling on its apprenticeship programme has transformed his career prospects.
Twenty-three-year-old Ethan joined Arena Security two years ago after applying online while working in a warehouse job that he felt lacked a clear career path.
Starting out in the company's security division, Ethan worked night shifts before progressing into a specialist apprenticeship focused on alarm installation, CCTV systems and fire safety technology.
The two-year programme, which runs from June 2026 until June 2028, combines paid employment with industry-recognised training, allowing apprentices to earn while they learn.
As part of the apprenticeship, Ethan attends training sessions in Watford while gaining practical experience across Hertfordshire, installing and maintaining security systems for homes and businesses.
Speaking about his role, Ethan said: "Every time I visit a house, it's different. You see all kinds of systems, price ranges and requirements.
"They all do the same thing in terms of providing security, but there are different levels of sensitivity and features. A lot of people know they want security but don't necessarily know what they need. For example, if they have pets, that can affect what system is right for them."
He added: "It's a great industry to be in because everyone needs security."
Reflecting on his career change, Ethan said: "I used to work in a warehouse and didn't really have a sense of direction. I applied online and started with the graveyard shift.
"Now I'm learning new skills every day and I hope to become fully qualified in the industry and stay with Arena."
Arena Security, which is based in Hertfordshire and operates across the region, employs more than 100 staff and provides a range of services including manned guarding, keyholding, mobile patrols, CCTV and alarm systems.
The company says its apprenticeship programme is designed to help develop the next generation of security professionals while addressing growing demand for skilled engineers in the sector.
For Ethan, the opportunity has provided more than just qualifications.
"It's given me a career path," he said.
Did you know? Arena Security offers apprenticeships that combine hands-on experience with nationally recognised qualifications in alarm installation, CCTV and fire safety systems, with all training costs covered by the company.
