The legendary Liam Gallagher wowed more than 150,000 gig goers on his regal return to Knebworth Park on Friday and Saturday – two and a half decades after Oasis played their era-defining gigs in the same North Herts fields.

The Rock 'n Roll Star showed his music would Live Forever in the hearts of his legion of fans that flocked to our area over the Platinum Jubilee weekend. (You can see our gallery of photographs from the event if you scroll to the top of this story and click the arrows)

On the day he grabbed his fourth UK solo number one album with new release C'mon You Know, the younger Gallagher brother thrilled old school Oasis fans who attended the iconic gigs first time around - as well as those who know him for his solo career.

Some Might Say the mesmerising Gallagher hypnotised the large crowds with a selection of Supersonic Oasis classics and more recent solo tracks - with a dozen of the 22 songs he performed being Oasis songs.

Hitchin resident Danny Pearson attended the gig on Saturday. He told Nub News: "It was epic. I missed out on seeing Oasis back in 96 so I was thrilled when Liam announced he'd be playing Knebworth again.

"The atmosphere was electric and everyone was buzzing before, during and after his ground shaking set. He seemed to feed off of the crowd and Liam seemed to grow after every song."

There was a nice symmetry - with a nod to the 1996 gigs - when Liam was joined on stage for the climax that was Champagne Supernova, when Stones Roses guitarist John Squire appeared, as fireworks were let loose over the crowds at Knebworth.

Kudos also went to Kasabian - now led by Serge Pizzorno after Tom Meighan's exit - who warmed up the crowd with a powerful set.

Fellow Liam Gallagher fan Joe Sheehan was also at the concert, telling Nub News: "Kasabian set the place bouncing and ready for the Big Man.

"It was clear to see that the Knebworth concerts meant a great deal to Liam and that he was determined to put on a show.

"His voice was unfaltering, set list well considered and he ensured there was no room for complaints for his part."

Dressed in a long brown parka jacket, on Saturday evening Liam launched into Hello, the first track from (What's the Story) Morning Glory? followed with Rock 'n' Roll Star, which opened the Definitely Maybe album.

Rock icon Gallagher also played Stand By Me from Be Here Now, as well as Roll It Over, from Oasis Standing on the Shoulder of Giants album.

Solo tracks from his latest No1 album included single Everything's Electric, co-written by Foo Fighters' Dave Grohl, More Power, Diamond in the Dark, and Better Days.

There was also a light-hearted reference to North Herts when Gallagher namechecked 'The Stevenage Massive'.

Gallagher came back out for his longed-for encore and smashed it up with a raft of Oasis hit singles including Some Might Say, Cigarettes & Alcohol, Supersonic, Wonderwall and Live Forever - as memories of the imperious Manchester band rocking Knebworth 1996 returned.

Travel Chaos

There were long delays on the A1(M) on Friday and Saturday with tailbacks on the motorway between junction 5 at Welwyn Garden City and junction 7 for Stevenage and the A602 - with bumper-to-bumper queues. There were reports of pedestrians on the A1 after the concert ended on Saturday evening.

There were also complaints and grumbles by many gig goers at the crowded, long walk back to Stevenage station, which saw a number of metal fences pushed over in frustration, as well as the lack of clear instruction at the station as late night revellers attempted to get home in the early hours.

Hitchin Nub News has asked Govia for comment.
