Why some grass in Hitchin will be left to grow longer this spring
By James Denselow 2nd Apr 2026
Residents across Hitchin may notice some grass verges and green spaces looking a little longer this spring — and it's part of a deliberate change by the council to support wildlife and biodiversity.
North Hertfordshire District Council says it has been gradually changing how often some areas are mown in recent years, working with its maintenance contractor John O'Connor.
The council says allowing some grass to grow longer helps create habitats for bees, butterflies, birds and other pollinators, as well as encouraging wildflowers and helping soil retain moisture during dry weather.
However, the council says it is trying to strike a balance between supporting nature and keeping public spaces safe and accessible.
This means:
- Some areas will still be cut regularly for visibility, access and appearance
- Other areas will be cut less frequently to support biodiversity
Mowing schedules will be reviewed throughout the growing season and adjusted depending on weather and growing conditions.
Cllr Amy Allen, the council's Executive Member for Environment, said the approach is part of a wider effort to improve the district's natural environment. She said: "By allowing some areas to grow longer, we're supporting pollinators, encouraging wildflowers, and helping our green spaces become more resilient to changing weather conditions.
"We'll continue to maintain key areas to ensure that they remain welcoming and safe for everyone to enjoy."
Residents looking for nearby parks and green spaces can use the council's app, which includes a "Find My Nearest" section listing local greenspaces across North Hertfordshire, including Hitchin.
