Luton Town 2-1 Middlesbrough

Rob Edwards' vibrant Hatters staged an entertaining comeback to all but seal third spot in the Championship, ahead of the play-offs.

Matchwinner Carlton Morris sealed the victory when slotting home a 67th minute penalty, to move Edwards' Premier League promotion chasers four points clear of Michael Carrick's fourth place Boro.

In front of a sold-out attendance of 10,063 a chilly but evocative Kenilworth Road on Monday evening, Cameron Archer's 40th minute goal for visitors Middlesbrough was cancelled out when Luton's Tom Lockyer nodded home four minutes after the interval.

In a hard-fought match packed with plenty of endeavour from both sides, Archer, Middlesbrough's 21-year-old Aston Villa loanee pounced on a long ball from No25 Matt Crooks, prior to evading Hatters keeper Ethan Horvath, to calmly slot home and put Carrick's side 1-0 ahead five minutes before the break.

However, Hatters resolute Welsh defender Lockyer's header from Alfie Doughty levelled on 49 minutes, to cap an excellent 24 hours for the 28-year-old former Cardiff academy defender, after deservedly being included in the EFL Championship team of the season.

With 23 minutes remaining, Morris, Town's bustling 27-year-old attacker was brought-down in the box by Middlesbrough keeper Zack Steffen, with referee Graham Scott awarding a spot-kick, despite protests that contact was marginal and not worthy of a foul.

No matter, up stepped former Norwich striker Morris, to calmly slot home for 2-1, sending the home support into rapture.

The triumph was made doubly sweet for loyal Hatters of a certain vintage, noting the victory was played on an auspicious date in Luton history - thanks to the fact that the Hatters lifted the 1988 League Cup at Wembley Stadium 25 years to the day.

If Edwards side continue to display such good form in the forthcoming play-offs, this excellent Hatters side may yet make history of their own when enjoying another trip to the national stadium next month.
