Steve Evans signs new, improved deal at Stevenage FC
Stevenage have confirmed a new, improved contract, which runs until June 2026, has been agreed with manager Steve Evans.
The decision to offer Evans a boosted salary is in recognition of the tough Scot's hard-work and success since his took over an ailing Boro two years ago next month.
At the time, struggling Stevenage were mired in a League relation battle that could well have seen the club fall back into non-league circles, following the departure of the ineffective Paul Tisdale.
Speaking to Nub News in the week of accepting the job back in March 2022, Evans insisted that he was the right man, to not only save Stevenage from relegation to the National League, but spoke of the great potential the club possessed - should they survive the non-league trapdoor.
In the time that followed, canny Evans was proved absolutely right, firstly saving Boro from relegation with plenty to spare - before his side surprised many in the fourth tier by romping to an outstanding second place finish last term.
The campaign culminating in promotion parties at the Lamex, after Boro dispatched Grimsby, followed by further joyous scenes after the long trip to Barrow to end the season.
The club said in a statement released on Thursday morning: "Stevenage FC have confirmed that a new improved contract, which runs until June 2026, has been agreed with manager Steve Evans."
Despite a recent blip, Evans has steered his Stevenage side to within touching distance of the League One play-off spots this term, with genuine hopes of sealing a coveted top six finish.
Chairman Phil Wallace added: "This isn't about the results of the last few games – or even this season.
"The results since Steve joined us in March 2022 speak for themselves.
"We've moved from being a League Two struggler to a League One side challenging for promotion to the Championship.
"The points gained from the last three games are not what we expected or needed, but experiences like this make us even more determined to finish in a top-six place."
Evans also received kudos for the leadership and empathy he showed off the field following the tragic death of young teenage Stevenage fan Ollie Gatfield, who died returning from supporting the Boro at their win against Shrewsbury last month, along with his seriously-injured pal Liam Sharpe.
Despite unexpected home defeats at the hands of Reading and Bristol Rovers, Evans Boro are still well set to mount a promotion charge this spring.
"I enjoy working with Steve and his experience of so many players, over so many levels, is a great asset to us," added Wallace.
"This improved deal creates time to plan for a longer term and allows us to have a recruitment policy that provides for both success and sustainability for years to come," the chairman said.
