Stevenage boss Alex Revell 'delighted' after first win in two months

By Layth Yousif 25th Nov 2020

Stevenage won their first league match in two months on Tuesday evening when they emerged victors against Port Vale.

Boro's 2-1 win over the visitors sealed only their second win of the season through goals from Aramdie Oteh and Danny Newton.

Despite a late strike from Devante Rodney causing a nervy final ten minutes the home side clinched a vital three points.

Stevenage boss Alex Revell was delighted at the deserved triumph which propelled Boro out of the League Two relegation places.

Read on for the transcript of what Revell said to Nub News after the match.

You must be delighted:

Yes. I'm tired. And a bit stressed! But from start to finish tonight we were excellent. We deserved today. For all the hard work, time and effort, from the belief we've shown. Everybody deserved it. It was a tough last ten minutes because it's always going to be tough when you haven't had those wins under your belt.

It was great to get through and to finish with a win against a good team. It was a good feeling.

The team's intensity was higher than it has been in recent weeks...

Yes, I think that after Saturday, we had to speak to them and ask them to show what it means to them. That's the biggest question: What does it mean to you to win? We changed things around from Saturday, to give it a bit of freshness. I thought the players that came in were outstanding and added to a top team performance.

We always talk about intensity and that is a team that we all want to watch week in week out. A team that wins tackles, a team that wins second balls, that wins headers, that wins first balls. Yes, we can still come away from this match thinking that we haven't taken all our chances, but ultimately we've won the game

Two goals from your strikers. They both worked really hard didn't they...?

Oteh has come in. He's a top kid. He's a top talent and works really hard. He deserved his goal. We all know about 'Newts' [Danny Newton]. We all know that when he doesn't score his frustration boils over with his work ethic. But what he showed tonight was that belief to keep going. He had chances in the game and he could have stopped - but he kept going and kept going. See got his results, he got a fantastic goal - and he'll be disappointed not to get more. But it was great to see the boys score.

Great support from the midfield including Tom Pett...

I couldn't stand here all night and say superlatives about all of them. Luther [James-Wildin] came in and didn't put a foot front. It shows that the team are playing for each other. That is huge. That is really huge. The fact is that the belief is there. We've only been a short way away from getting good results. I believe that and will continue to believe that. It doesn't matter what I hear and what I see. I work with these lads everyday and I see what they can do. Of course they are still learning but today is a good step up.

The biggest challenge is that we now have to go on a run to climb away from where we are. To prove that we are better than the league table suggests.

We don't want to be down there. We don't want to be where we are. We're working extremely hard every single day. The players are. Everyone. The players that aren't involved, the subs - because it's taken all of them to keep everyone else going. And that's so important. Belief is so important and we've never stopped believing. Well enjoy the win. It's a lovely feeling. We haven't had enough of that this season.

There was a bottle of bubbly for the man of the match, you'll be having one as well won't you?

[Laughs]Listen I'm just delighted for everyone at the club because the players have never stopped working. I'm delighted because it shows that when you have belief in people you keep making them working everyday it does come.
