Three ways Stevenage FC can boost results
Three ways Stevenage FC can boost results

Despite winning only 5 out of 25 games this season, Alex Revell has made dramatic and significant improvements from the seemingly doomed Stevenage side of last season.

It's the former Boro striker's first managerial job and although the team had a stuttering start, a good run of form and some surprise results have renewed hope of a bright second half to the season.

Despite this sudden run of good form, there are still areas that the Hertfordshire outfit could improve on, Hitchin Nub News has assessed three areas that may need addressing.[.B]

Being more clinical/composed under pressure

Despite being ranked 20th in the league for expected goals per game with 1.09 per game, on the pitch Boro do create a lot of chances. However, their finishing leaves a lot to be desired.

Having only scored 19 goals this season, something needs to change. They've converted 19 out of 82 shots in target. This tells a story of strikers lacking in confidence.

Admittedly, there have been some outstanding goalkeeper performances in those games, but I'm sure most Boro fans could name countless chances that should've been converted.

Final pass

The final pass has haunted Boro for the last two seasons. It's been another season of 'what if's'.

This team has come on leaps and bounds so far this season.

The difference between now and September is staggering. They're creating a lot more chances and the patterns of play are now a lot clearer to see.

One thing the team may lack in important moments is composure.

Decision making in the final third is definitely not a strength of the squad.

Hopefully new signings Jack Roles and Jahmal Hector-Ingram will bring some calmness in the attacking third.

Progression up the pitch

The game plan at times seems very mixed in the pitch. Against Portsmouth for example, Boro pressed very high trying to force mistakes. It worked again against Oldham.

The transitions between defence and attack seem very forced at times.

Trying to play out of the back too quick and forcing the ball over the top of the defence has resulted in a lot of misplaced passes.

Instead, I believe Boro should be trying to bypass that midfield press and trying to retain the ball rather than trying to play risky passes.

We have very direct wingers and we've seen what players like Elliot List and Jack Aitchinson can do when they're on the ball. Get them on the ball and let them work their magic.
