A Hitchin coffee morning held as a celebration of Ukraine Independence Day has been hailed as a huge success.

Brand Steet's Hitchin Town Hall and North Hertfordshire Museum hosted the popular event intended to mark 31 years to the day since Ukraine declared independence from the Soviet Union in 1991. The event also took place exactly six months after Russia's invasion of their neighbour.

People from Ukraine were invited to come along to the coffee morning along with various local groups, such as Food Rescue, (who operate out of the Half Moon Pub every Thursday morning. 930am – 11am as reported previously by Nub News here )as well as North Herts Minority Ethnic Forum, Hitchin Library and the team from Create Community and Letchworth Food Café.

Hitchin resident Danny Pearson attended the event in solidarity and told Nub News: "It was a great event with families enjoying the hospitality laid on by the amazing town hall and North Herts Museum team.

"They have done such an amazing job and I hope they feel very proud of what they have achieved over these last few difficult months.

"Thank you also to the local organisations and groups that were able to come along and share their knowledge with our refugee friends."
