Hitchin MP Bim Afolami has congratulated Rishi Sunak, the latest winner of the Tory party leadership contest, amid a period of unprecedented instability.

Sunak, who is married to the daughter of a billionaire, becomes the UK's third PM in three months - and Hitchin's MP Mr Afolami was there to greet the former Chancellor after the result was announced.

Sunak, beat Penny Mordaunt - who, like the former, also ran and lost against previous incumbent Liz Truss, whose disastrous economic policies ensured Boris Johnson's successor only lasted 44 days at No10 - with Mr Afolami backing the new PM over the summer.

Tweeting from his official account (below) on Monday, Hitchin's MP said: "Congratulations Rishi Sunak," adding: "Quite simply he is the best person for the job."

However, calls for a General Election intensified from many, including our town's Liberal Democrat candidate Sam Collins, who will stand against Mr Afolami, with many believing that Sunak does not have a mandate from the country.

Over the next 24-48 hours, PM Sunak will be appointing his cabinet, with many seasoned political observers expecting Mr Afolami to be handed a junior role in government return for his support.
