A new study has shown that if a General Election was held today, Hitchin would see the Liberal Democrats emerge triumphant, taking the seat from the Tories.

Despite the Conservative Party electing a new PM, with Liz Truss being announced as their new leader on Monday (September 5) afternoon, data from the highly-respected Britain Elects website has shown that the Hitchin and Harpenden constituency would turn from blue to orange.

The news comes as a further blow to present incumbent Bim Afolami MP, still reeling from backing the wrong horse in losing candidate Rishi Sunak.

With the Lib Dems only requiring around a five per cent swing from the Tories to win the seat, the new poll on how the House of Commons would look makes interesting reading.

According to the latest modelling, the study emphatically underlines that voters in our area would opt for their Parliamentarian to be Sam Collins ahead of Mr Afolami to represent Hitchin.

The latest model prediction based on the latest polls show that Labour would win a General Election with 336 MPs compared to 210 Tory MPs with the Lib Dems landing 25 parliamentarians, including Hitchin's Mr Collins.

Voting results if a General Election was held today:

Liberal Democrats: 34.7 per cent

Conservative: 34.9 per cent

Labour 25.3 per cent

This would translate into a whopping 29.4 per cent fall in support for the Tories, plagued by Partygate scandals, sleaze and ineffective in the face of the ongoing cost of living crisis after 12 years in power - while Labour would see a huge increase of 41.5 per cent.

Speaking to Nub News Mr Collins said: "I think the last vaguely local thing I saw from Bim Afolami was him visiting the Job Centre in a neighbouring constituency.

"It looks to me that rather than spending the summer working for local people in our area, Bim has been spending all of his time as 'Cheerleader in Chief' for Rishi Sunak.

"Once again its is apparent that career is being put before constituency, rather than helping local people deal with the cost of living crisis, abysmal rail services, and so many other issues, another attempt to rise up the Conservative party has been prioritised.

"The people of Hitchin are being taken for granted yet again."
