Hitchin residents react to loss of St Mary's distinctive Weeping Willow tree.

As Hitchin Nub News reported on Tuesday, (September 13), a notable tree in the heart of our town, known to so many, is no more.

A large Weeping Willow snapped at its base and fell at around 1015am. Thankfully there were no casualties, with Hitchin Town Rangers making the area safe after being alerted by members of the public shortly afterwards. While Nub News understands there is currently a tree surgeon at the site.

However, despite the tree dying, its legacy will live long in the minds of many Hitchinites, as it was it situated in such a prominent place along our town's picturesque riverside - not to mention the fact it was one of the most photographed.

Hitchin resident Danny Pearson spoke for many when he said: "That tree is so iconic.

"For years that tree has stood and grown and appered in thousands of photographs.

"I remember playing around it when I was a young child. I hope some of it can be saved for future generations."

While Hitchin Town Centre boss Tom Hardy added: "It's such a shame to see an iconic town tree fallen like this.

"The view of the church will look very different now and I hope the council will be looking to replant something in its place."
