North Herts sport: League Two Stevenage FC suspend plans for return of fans after government announce new restrictions

PM Boris Johnson announcing new measures to halt soaring Covid cases impacts all areas of our lives and is expected to continue for six months.

The news has huge implications for us all and affects most aspects of society - including sporting events in north Herts.

Following Tuesday lunchtime's announcement by the government - who have now suspended plans for a return of crowds across the country in EFL and Premier League matches from October 1 - Stevenage FC have confirmed that their planned test event against Milton Keynes on October 6 has now been cancelled.

Detailed plans had been drawn up by the club to allow a limited number of supporters to attend the upcoming EFL Trophy match against MK - but have now been paused.

Until the PM's announcement in the House of Commons, the test event would have been the first opportunity for fans to have been able to watch a live match at the Lamex since February 15 - and would have been a big step in moving towards regular crowds of 1,000 spectators once again.

However despite the news, the club said: "We will continue to liaise with the safety advisory group to finalise its plans for a return of crowds, ensuring it is in a strong position to roll these out when permitted."

2020/21 season ticket cards will be sent to those supporters who paid for postage during the course of this week, along with all junior season ticket holder's free replica shirts.

Those season ticket holders who chose to collect their season ticket cards will be able to do so in the week prior to the first test event.

The club shop will continue to remain closed, with all merchandise available to purchase online at www.StevenageFCShop.com.

Fans can also watch tonight's EFL Trophy fixture against Southampton U21's live on iFollow for just £10. Kick-off is at 7pm and match passes can be purchased on the club's website.
