League Two: Crewe 1-2 Stevenage - Jamie Reid's brace seals memorable comeback for Steve Evans' Boro

Two second half goals from Jamie Reid sealed a memorable 2-1 victory over Crewe Alexandra at Gresty Road on Saturday afternoon.

In a hard-fought match at the Mornflake Stadium, Steve Evans' Boro emerged triumphant after recovering from Rod McDonald's first half goal to come from behind to ease into second spot in League Two. Boro were also buoyed when keeper Taye Ashby-Hammond saved an early penalty.

On 19 minutes, referee Tom Nield awarded a spot-kick after Crewe's No11 Dan Agyei drew the foul, which led to a furious reaction from Terence Vancooten, who was adamant he did not deserve to be penalised for making contact with the 25-year-old former Oxford attacker.

Up steeped Crewe No8, Conor Thomas in a bid to score from 12 yards. However, Boro keeper Ashby-Hammond on loan from Fulham, was equal to the task, diving full-length to his right to palm the ball away, much to the delight of his teammates and the small but vociferous band of travelling fans housed in the Ice Cream Van Stand.

Evans was booked after only 25 minutes gone for dissent, after being furious with Alex's Agyei for what he perceived to be a dive for the missed penalty.

The Boro boss had further reason to be annoyed 120 seconds later, when his team went 1-0 behind through Rod McDonald's header following Tariq Uwakwe's cross.

The 23-year-old Ashby-Hammond denied Bassala Sambou on the half hour mark prior to Boro's new signing Alex Gilbey testing Crewe's keeper on loan from Arsenal, Arthur Okonkwo, with a deflected shot five minutes before the interval.

Stevenage came out fired up for the second half, with Jake Taylor seemingly encouraged to push forward further.

The tactical switch paid dividends when Boro equalised shortly afterwards, with Reid firing home after dovetailing well, with Taylor to finish past the highly-rated Okonkwo 180 seconds after the restart.

Reid then grabbed his second of the afternoon to complete a remarkable turnaround against Alex Morris' men, when Okonkwo spilled a high ball in a crowded box only for the 28-year-old former Torquay striker to slot home and make it 2-1 to Stevenage -

The goal sparked joyous scenes as the team celebrated in unison with the visiting supporters from North Herts, that numbered 167 in a crowd 3,669.

Next up for Stevenage is Sutton United at the Lamex next Saturday (September 10) after Evans side put their first defeat of the season behind them following their 1-0 loss at Salford last week.
