Stevenage beat Crewe 2-1 to move into second spot in League Two following boss Steve Evans' half-time hairdryer

Steve Evans revealed he gave his first hairdryer as Stevenage boss to spark his side's hard-fought 2-1 victory at Crewe Alexandra on Saturday afternoon.

The well-earned triumph saw Boro move into second spot in League Two - following Jamie Reid's second half brace to seal an impressive comeback, after Evans' side fell behind to Rod McDonald's early goal.

In an eventful game, passionate Evans was booked by referee Tom Nield, for what appeared to be dissent after he appeared to be sarcastically clapping the official - despite Evans insisting he was simply encouraging his side.

While keeper Taye Ashby-Hammond saved an early penalty to give Boro a boost at Gresty Road in front of 167 travelling fans from North Herts in an official attendance of 3,669.

Talking to Nub News after the match, Evans admitted he gave his team a talking to during the half time interval with his side 1-0 down to Alex Morris' side.

When the charismatic Scot was asked if he had administered his first 'hairdryer' as Stevenage boss, Evans said: "Yes I would. Though I would say it was more 'generalisms' than [anything aimed] at specific individuals.

"I thought for the first 15 minutes we were really good. Then we stopped winning our individual headers. Then we didn't hold the ball up. then we didn't bring people into play.

"I would call it a 'brash' conversation with my team. It only lasted about 20 seconds. But they knew. They knew.

"I said at Salford after they beat us that we didn't really turn up. But we had strong men, strong leaders all over the pitch today. I thought Luke Norris has his best game."

To cap an excellent day all round for Evans, his beloved Celtic also won. It's no secret the tough Glaswegian is a fervent, dyed-in-the-wool Celtic fan - and was left delighted after the Parkhead giants routed city rivals Rangers 4-0 to win the Old Firm derby.

When asked how he would mark Boro's and Celtic's win double, the 59-year-old Glasgow-born manager replied with a twinkle in his eye: "I will have a glass of wine tonight," before adding wryly, "I will also definitely be watching a full re-run of the game including Celtic fans singing and celebrating.

"I messaged [Celtic boss] big Ange [Ange Postecoglou] this morning and just said: 'Come on the troops.'

"It's a great day for one side of Glasgow. Look, I have to say there are two great sides in Glasgow - but when you beat the opposition 4-0 it makes it a great weekend - especially when Stevenage win 2-1 away in the Football League."
