League Two: Doncaster Rovers 0-1 Stevenage. Match report from the Eco-Power Stadium by Layth Yousif
Jordan Roberts first half header consolidated second spot for Stevenage in a 1-0 victory at Doncaster Rovers on Tuesday evening.
The former Crawley and Ipswich Town striker headed home on 25 minutes to the delight of the 170 travelling fans in an official attendance of 5,960.
Steve Evans Boro made five changes from the weekend including goalscorer Roberts who was restored to the starting line-up.
Evans side started the evening in second after the weekend's 3-2 defeat to the third place Cobblers saw them drop off top spot, following an afternoon he'd rather forget - which ended with the passionate Scot calling the referee and officials 'hopeless' while also slamming the visitors post-match behaviour.
Evans was forced to watch Tuesday's match from Doncaster's main stand due to his touchline ban - after Saturday's first half sending off from the dugout, following two yellow cards picked up in a short space of time against Northampton.
The home side nearly took the lead on 22 minutes with what would have been a contender for goal of the season.
Rovers' No14 Harrison Biggins situated on the half way line, spotted Boro keeper Taye Ashby-Hammond off his line and duly attempted an outrageous lob from the middle of the pitch. The ball was delivered at pace with a relatively flat trajectory and clipped the top of the crossbar before flying over. It was a delicious piece of skill and audacity that deserved a goal.
However, it was Evans side that went ahead 180 seconds later, when Roberts headed home from close range, following Arthur Read's cross, to send the travelling Boro fans into raptures.
Moments before the interval Boro's Jamie Reid nearly doubled the lead, but his shot from an acute angle was saved by Rovers keeper Jonathan Mitchell.
Rovers came out fired up after the break, as befitted a side with a new manager. Danny Schofield leading the club for the first time, following sacking of previous incumbent Gary McSheffery earlier in the month, after a middling run of form that saw the home side start the match in 12th place.
In a spell of sustained pressure Terrence Vancooten blocked James Maxwell's powerful drive on the hour mark, prior to Ashby-Hammond saving well from Rovers right-back Kyle Maxwell. But the Stevenage backline stayed resolute to see out the match, picking up three vital points in the process.
The victory saw Boro remain behind leaders Leyton Orient, but four points clear of the Cobblers in third following Sutton's 2-2 draw at Sixfields.
Stevenage travel to struggling Colchester on Saturday aiming to continue their excellent form on the road this term.
