Stevenage's acclaimed boss Steve Evans has been speaking movingly about the Her Majesty, The Queen II's death.

The passing of our monarch has seen a period of mourning ahead of a state funeral on Monday, and North Herts' only football league club are no different.

While Evans' side have been earning plaudits after an exceptional start to the season - including another victory on Tuesday evening (September 13) that saw them consolidate second place in League Two - off the field, the club has been busy paying its respects to the former monarch.

Prior to Boro beating Newport County 1-0 at Broadhall Way, Evans shared his take on the last few days, and how the Queen's death has affected everyone at the club.

Speaking to Nub News after the match, the respected Evans said: "There's no doubt we have all been touched by Her Majesty's passing.

"We were all sad when we came back in [to training after the news broke of Queen Elizabeth II's death].

"It was absolutely right to call [last weekend's games off]. If we'd have tried to play on the Saturday with Her Majesty passing two days before it would have been insulting to a lady that served us all these years.

"On Saturday, I said to the players we can only respect Her Majesty's passing. We owe a loyalty to our supporters who turn up every week and we owe it to them and ourselves to be strong against Newport.

"We can all pray and send our thoughts when The Lady goes on her final journey next week."

An excellent goal moments after the interval by new loan signing Alex Gilbey was enough to seal victory, albeit a comfortable triumph, against an insipid Newport, six months on from the South Wales side beating Boro at the Lamex to precipitate former boss Paul Tisdale's sacking.

With Stevenage underlining just how much Evans has improved the team in the intervening six months, County were a shadow of their former selves and were deservedly beaten.

A rendition of God Save The King was sung by a number of spectators inside the ground on Tuesday evening, following an immaculately observed minute's silence prior to kick-off as league football returned.

Evans reflected, adding "The games were called off on Friday but we came in Saturday. We worked really hard on Saturday. We are trying to be relentless and expect a certain standard.

"I read that a lot of other managers called off training over the weekend - saying the players could have a weekend off. Well, that tells me the managers must have wanted a weekend off themselves.

"The dressing room deserves enormous credit. They're a brilliant group to work with.

"I said to them at the start of the season: 'Give me everything,' and they have so far."
