Alex Revell's Stevenage beat Southampton U21s in the EFL Trophy at the Lamex on Tuesday evening.

Boro continued their great start to the new campaign with a late winner from Tyrone Marsh to beat David Horseman's young Saints side.

Marsh's injury time goal capped an excellent turnaround after the visitors went 1-0 ahead in the first half through Callum Slattery in the 37th minute.

The goal was harsh on Boro and keeper Jamie Cumming after Slattery's free-kick took a wicked deflection to wrong foot the on-loan Chelsea keeper.

However, the home side refused to be downhearted and soon restored parity with Marcus Dinanga equalising for Revell's side in the third minute of three added on before half time.

Boro made seven changes after their 3-0 victory over Oldham at Broadhall Way on Saturday, also naming a 15-year-old, Sam Tinubu, who would have become the club's youngest-ever player if had an made an appearance.

His services weren't required in a hard-fought game contested by two attack-minded sides with Stevenage centre-back Terrence Vancooten and on-loan Birmingham City defender impressing in Boro's solid backline.

With penalties looming both sides battled to win the game in normal time. In the 91st minute the lively Femi Akinwande found substitute Elliot Osborne - squaring the ball Marsh, who finished emphatically to put Revell's side ahead for the first time all evening.

While cruel on a battling Saints side, it was nothing more than the spirited hosts deserved.
