Debenhams is to reopen 97 of its high street stores including its Stevenage site on Monday for a 'fire sale'.

However, the decision to open its doors will only be a short lived move to underpin a closing down sale intended to clear stock - before they finally close for good on Saturday, May 15.

Many from Hitchin and north Herts shopped at the store based in the Roaring Meg Retail Park.

Debenhams said the store would be offering up to 70 per cent off fashion and homewares as well as up to 50 per cent off beauty and fragrance from Monday.

The department store which can trace its roots back to 1778 collapsed last year due to pressures caused by the Covid crisis as well as structural issues blighting 'High Street' shopping.
