Successful Hitchin author Matt Adock with his book Complete Darkness

A debut sci-fi novel by a Hitchin author featuring a hedonistic loner with a chequered past, and his robot sidekick in a dystopian hell has been a chart topping success during lockdown.

Matt Adock's literary style throughout his first book Complete Darkness has already been compared by critics to HG Wells, CS Lewis, and Douglas Adams – with his tome clinching first spot in the Amazon chart for religious fiction.

A government scheme offering cyclists in Hitchin £50 bike repair vouchers has been launched in a £2bn bid to battle the growing problem of obesity across the UK.

The project is intended to boost health and fitness through financial incentives aimed at getting people on a bike.

July has been far wetter than we in Hitchin would have liked but the month is set to end with a scorching high of 31C expected later in the week.

After a wet and grey Monday - Tuesday's high will be around 18C - the sun will eventually come out as the week progresses as temperatures gradually rise, climaxing on the final day of July, this Friday, with a mini-heatwave.
